Marriage Mortimer and Griffith(s)
« on: Friday 21 June 19 15:12 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I have trawled all of the usual places FindMyPast Ancestry FamilySearch and cant find any details on a marriage between john Mortimer and Mary Ann Griffith(s) more than likely in London prior to 1825.

Any help appreciated

Maybe she had been married before? A widow?
So the name she married under may not be her maiden name ;D

I had just that this week, researching a friend's family tree. ;)

They had a son Cornelius circa 1823 born London and a daughter Jane circa 1827

Where in London was Cornelius born please?  I can see a Cornelius Mortimer baptised 2 October 1823 St Marylebone, but he was a son of Charles & Sophia.

Also - what's the source of the Griffiths maiden name?

Cornelius went to Oz  and got married in Australia more than once. One wedding on the certificate he stated his father was John  Mortimer and his mother was Mary Ann Griffiths and he was born in London England . This is the total sum of info and no trail for Cornelius in the UK can be found.

How odd.

As I mentioned, there was a Cornelius Mortimer born at the right time in London, but to Charles and Sophia.  He seems likely to have died in Kensington Mar qtr 1862 (his wife Harriet appearing as a widow in Paddington by 1871) but with his age recorded as 49 rather than 39.

When does your Cornelius first appear in Australia?  Might he have assumed the identity of the deceased man in London, do you think?
