Frederick James Hughes of Toronto
« on: Wednesday 12 June 19 01:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I wonder if someone can look up this man for me?

He was born in 1923 and during the war was a POW of the Germans. According to an RCAF Casualty List from 4 April, 1944 his next of kin was his wife who I have learned was named Lola. Address given at the time was 1836 Queen Street East, Toronto.

According to ancestry, there is a Frederick James Hughes deceased at Toronto on 26 March 2002 but the external link (Obituary Daily Times Index, 1995 - 2012) no longer works. Is this him?

For sure, it is NOT this man who although having the same name and also being RCAF, never left Canada while in military service: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/193848271/dora-lesley-hughes#view-photo=177011009

Many thanks,

DTD

Was his wife Iola?  There is a Fred Hughes, accountant, in Toronto on voters lists with wife Iola.  An obituary for one of this Fred Hughes can be found.  Iola is by herself on the 1968 voters list which might indicate this Fred died young.

Thanks Cosmac and Sandra.

My informant read a capital "I" as a lower case "l" so Iola became Lola.

From Sandra's obit I now have his three sons. It appears Bob passed away in 2017.

Cosmac, is it possible to pursue the 1960s angle? I'm pretty sure the 2002 obit is likely him but would just like to make sure.

Thanks again, folks.

Found an obituary - likely for Iola's father ... in 1946 1949.  He was Sargeant Harvey Grieve.  He was 59, late of Geraldton, Ont.  Father of Iola (Mrs Hughes), Adrienne (Mrs Kaupa), Hazel (Mrs Caveen) Toronto and Ronald of Vancouver.  Interment St. John's Cemetery.

RK

Amended - I put the wrong year.  He died in 1949 ::)

Globe and Mail has a list of Prisoners Liberated (dated May 4 1945).  On the Air Force list is W.O. Frederick James Hughes of 76 Eglinton Ave East.

14 Oct 1950 in the Toronto Star is a memorial notice for Harvey Grieve.  It says it is in loving memory of my father who passed away Oct 14 1949......

It is from his daughter Iola, son in law Fred and grandsons R and Bobbie (same names as in the 2002 obituary).

Don Zimmer, husband to Iola Hughes, with Hughes children noted in obit link on this thread.  One might assume that Fred and Iola parted ways and each went on to marry someone else.

Hi there,

I just googled my grandmother's name Iola Grieve and stumbled upon this thread. My name is Christopher Ronald Hughes and Frederick James Hughes was my estranged grandfather.

Would love to connect to learn more about him and your connection with him.

Please reach out.

Thanks,
Chris
