Hello,
Would anyone be able to help me trace the parents of James & Letitia JOHNSTON, possibly in Dunboe Parish, Co Derry between 1825 & 1850?
James with his wife Jane, 3 children & sister Letitia migrated to Victoria AUS aboard "Cambodia" in 1851/1852, James & family "on own account" & Letitia indentured as servant in Geelong VIC.
I have assembled the family info below from the following documents:
- 1909 NSW death cert for Letitia Parkinson (ne Johnston)
- 1861 VIC death certificate for James Johnston
- 1853 VIC marriage certificate for Letitia Johnston & John Parkinson (James witness)
- 1851/1852 Cambodia passenger lists for James, his family & Letitia
- 1845 (05-May) Coleraine civil marriage record for James Johnston & Jane Lawson
Family info:
- James' & Letitia's parents - William Johnston farmer & Martha ?? (maiden may be Johnston)
- Jane's parents - Andrew Lawson & ?? ??
- James - b. ~1822, Co Antrim (townland unknown), Presbyterian,
calling - 1845 carpenter, 1851 ag laborer, 1861 smith
- Jane - b. ~1823, Co. Derry (townland unknown), Presbyterian, calling housekeeper
- James' & Janes' children - John 1846, Mary 1848, Isabella 1851, William Andrew 1854
- Letitita - b. ~1826, Co Antrim, Presbyterian, calling 1851 dairymaid
- Letitita & John's children - James 1854, William 1856, Martha 1859, John 1863, Robert 1867
James' & Janes' address for 1845 marriage was Altikeeragh, Dunboe, Co Derry.
However, I don't know if the Johnstons moved to Derry as a family in 1830s or whether James came alone as an itinerant farm worker.
There are William (Wm) & Martha Johnston (Johnson) entries in on-line census fragments / substitutes for Derry in 1831 / 1841 plus in Griffiths' 1859 Register. Conversely, there is also an 1841 census extract (pre-1922) listing William & Martha Johnston together in Gortaheran, Co Antrim.
PRONI's Presbyterian BDM records would probably be useful but I don't have on-line access.
Any suggestions or extra info would be much appreciated.
Regards,
AUS-Mike
