George Muir is buried in the little "Private" walled burial ground that sits between the old churchyard and the new cemetery at Cambusnethan. I don't think there is a gravestone but I will go and have a look. I have photographed many of the stones there but have nothing on file for him.

The following information is taken from the gravedigger's day book -

GEORGE MUIR, waggon greaser, Wishaw, aged 66 years, married.
Parents - William Muir & Margaret Donaldson.
interred in the Private, plot 310, on 8th August 1866.

Also in that plot are the following -

WILLIAM COLE, miner, Watsonville, (parish of) Hamilton, aged 56 years, married.
Parents - John Cole & Agnes Ruedick.
Interred in Private 310 on 23rd May 1874.

MARY MUIR, housewife, Glasgow, aged 79 years, widow.
Parents - James Brown & Rachel Paterson.
Interred in Private 310 on 8th May 1883.

Hope this helps? I have no idea who William Cole could be.  Watsonville, although technically in the parish of Hamilton at that time, was actually in the town of Motherwell.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Mary Muir was George Muir's wife ( as previous message ) they married in 1843.

I purchased William Cole death certificate from SP & he was married to Jane Graham ,checked census . ( both from Ireland).
I couldn't find a connection between William & George.

I was sent picture of George's headstone years ago ,only the top half was readable ,so if you are able to take another photo that would be appreciated.

George was killed instantly when he was caught accidentally between the buffers of two wagons of a mineral train at the siding. So i assumed The Caldonian Railway paid for the headstone?

aj57, you'd have to be a bit more precise, it's a huge cemetery. I will only search if you can give me a male muir with his wife's maiden surname, otherwise it's too time consuming.

Sailor William is still confusing me

In 1864 William Muir age 26 was applying for poor relief with wife
Margaret LINDSAY age 24
And sons Thomas b1861 and baby William it says he is son of Thomas  Muir forrester. and Mary Baird deceased.

So I think .i.ll have to rewrite my tree a bit

Thoma Muir married to Mary Baird was williams twin so the grandparents
Are the same.

But  it s  not my sailor William

I was interested to read the entire thread of your long quest for information on George Muir and his father, William Muir.
I am a South African origin great-grandson of Thomas Muir (TM), George's son (born at Nemphlar, Lanark 25 August 1844). At this stage I have no additional details on George or his father, but am now trying to get a local historian to look for very specific information in the Biggar/Lanark area. It looks as if there may be very little prospect of success given your long search! An Australian granddaughter of TM's second son, Thomas Paterson Brown Muir b. Erskine, Renfrewshire, 7 April 1885, has been searching as long as you have been, and has also drawn a blank on this information.
One thing however: In a 1906 article, I believe based on an interview with TM, it is stated that George's father William was a souter (I understand this is a shoemaker) in Biggar, whereas you say he was estate manager at Symingtoune (which I believe is near Biggar). I can provide you with a copy of the article, which also gives some information on William's supposed involvement in a church schism in Biggar, and suggests a family connection with the earlier Muirs of Annieston. I have no idea whether this is more than fantasy!
In turn I would be interested to see the front page of the family bible register that lists - George Muir , Elizabeth Robb, Mary Brown: Is it a document that is still in a known location?
