Mary Bunning born 1792
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 22:02 BST (UK) »
The above named married my 3x greatgrandfather, Thomas Gray in Stamford in 1813 on the 9th of November; information I have been given was she was born in Dungarvan Ireland. On the parish record from St Michael's, one of the witnesses was Joseph Bunning - possibly here father or brother? I would like to confirm that she was born in Ireland as there seem to be several Bunning's in Stamford at the time who give their place of birth as there on later censuses. Does anyone here share this ancestor?

Yes, I looked at the signature carefully, I think it is Bunning, so possibly a father or brother. I was hoping the parish record would give a father's name so I could confirm as Irish root, but of course it is pre-1837... One of their daughters was said to have an Irish accent and smoked a clay pipe - would have loved to have met her!

I remember a similar story of children born in Ireland to English Parents and the reason seemed to be that the father was a soldier who was stationed there.

I checked on Dungavarn and found one quote stating that Dungavarn Castle was used as barracks for the British army from the 18th century.

Some trees on Rootsweb give Mary's parents as Robert and Sarah and that she was born in Dungavarn in 1799. However, Robert married Sarah Pulford in Stamford in 1799 and their daughter Mary was baptised there in 1799.

When Joseph Bunning married in 1813, one of the witnesses was Charlotte Bossingham, the wife of Joseph Bossingham. Joseph's sister, Jane Bossingham married William Bunning in Stamford in 1790.

The families seem to be connected with each other but I can't see exactly how and I can't pin down baptisms for Robert and William. I thought they might have come from Empingham, near Stamford but Robert, b 1778, would be too young to be the father of Joseph and Mary, and is in Empingham in 1851.

Joseph Bunning, who died in 1817, might be the father but I can't find his baptism or marriage.

Many thanks David; it seems another family story may turn out to be misleading! I'll investigate further. Mary is on my paternal side; on the maternal side there are are Irish connections as well - but as you have mentioned; my Great-grandfather was a bandsman in the Connaught Rangers, born in London, he joined up at 14 and a half. One of his children was born in Ireland. His father-in-law, also in the regiment was born in Surrey.
My DNA result did come back as 12% Irish and Scottish, but I guess most people in the UK would be that too!
