Yes, Thank you.  I have posted the question on the occupations board.  I know it is not exactly an occupation but it was the nearest I could find.

Hi there

Can I add my two pennyworth? It's not an occupation. All the people above him are prisoners, the one immediately above is prisoners child. It seems to have a letter i as the last but one letter,as it has a dot above it.A small handful of men have the same notation hence the ditto's and then the word prisoner starts again.

I magnified it to oblivion  ;D but still couldn't make the word out.
Over to the clever people who can clean up the very smudged writing I think  ;D

Cheers

Carol

Hi

I don't know if you have seen - but both the people who have answered the question in the Common Room are inclined to the answer Debtor - for the relationship

Right - I have done some more digging in my various transcripts for Abingdon - I don't know how much of the following you already have, but I will put it here in case its new

From the registers for St Michaels - a comparitivly new church built in the 1850s I found (among others)

marriage1878 July 30th
John Lindsey (x) wid fa drover of St Helens  s/o George Lindsey lab
to
Eliza Whittington (x) wid fa of Bury Street d/o Henry Porter - tailor by banns
witnessed by George Cole & Clarissa Porter

the fact that a Clarissa Porter witnessed this marriage made me think that others of Elizas family may be around in Abingdon.

I think this is her in 1841 census

32/01/17 Ock Street
PORTER
Elizabeth 30 Laundress Y
Eliza 10 Y
Henry 7 Y

So on searching for Porter in the St Helens registers I turned up this

marriage March 4th 1845
William WIGGINGTON (x) 20 bach twine spinner of Bury Lane s/o Thomas WIGGINGTON twine spinner
to
Eliza Porter (x) 18 spinster Sempstress of Bury Lane d/o Henry Porter - tailor
witnessed John Moltun & William Grace

and again from St Helens

marriage 25th September 1886
Job Seymour (x) 51 wid lab of Queen Street s/o Henry Seymour gardener
to
Eliza Lindsey (x) 52 wid machinist of Queen street d/o Henry Porter - tailor

Thee are other Wiggington entries in the St Helens register which I will have a look at later (I must do some housework first)

back soon

Wow! A tremendous amount of information.

I had found Eliza's three marriages but only in the civil registration so I did not have the exact dates or, more importantly, the names of fathers and witnesses.  I now know she was Eliza Porter and married two widowers. What does "fa" mean please?

Wiggington seems to be the more common spelling at an earlier time.  John who died aged 80 certainly seems a likely candidate for Thomas' father.  I shall see if I can find any further traces of him, possibly in the Davetry area.

The George Porter/ Mary Wiggington marriage is also worth further investigation.

Thank you once again for all your help.

Hilary
