Abingdon 1861 Lookup
« on: Tuesday 16 August 05 08:06 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help me please.  I am looking for the following family in Abingdon St Helens:

William T(probably Thomas) Whittington 1826
Eliza Whittington 1828 (born Windsor)
Elizabeth Whittington 1851
Ann Whittington 1853
John Whittington 1858
Thomas Whittington 1860

They were all born in Abingdon, except Eliza. I can find them  from 1871 onwards, but there is no sign of them in 1861 (on Ancestry).

Hi  ;D

Excellent!  I was advised to give rootschat a try and now I shall recommend it to everyone.  What a fast and useful response.

Wiggington!  No wonder I couldn't find them.  The spinner bit is probably twine spinner.  It seems to be much the same as rope maker.  Don't now about slop maker though.

I had found the marriage to Lucy but was unable to confirm the connection to William T.  This means I can take the family back much further.

Thank you very much for your kind efforts.

Hilary

Hi

a slop maker was a trouser maker - it was quite a big employer of women in Abingdon at the time - they would be delivered the materials to make up at home and then paid peice work for each pair they made - it was work that mothers with children could do at home

Debbie

PS Would you like me to see if I can find anything else on Lucy nee Thomas for you or are you just interested in the Whittinton line?

Hi

Slop maker - that must be from the same root as a sailor's "Slop chest"  that they purchased clothes from.

I would be grateful for anything on the Whittingtons or Lucy Thomas.  It doesn't seem fair to just follow the male line.  ;)

Hi

This is somewhat off topic so I may have to post it elsewhere, but you seem very knowledgable about the berkshire area.

William White 1843 born Buckland Berkshire is listed in the 1871 census Rg10/1281/7/116/9/43.    (He is an in-law to Thomas Whittington, son of William T).  Unfortunately he is in the county jail.  His job is farm labourer he is 28 and married.  The relationship to head is listed as Bobton.  At least I think that is whay it says.  Do you know what that could be?

Hi Hilary

I see what you mean - I have had a look at it and I can't figure it out either - however I think I know how to put a copy of the image on the Common Room part of these chat boards where some of the real experts hang out and we could see what they think - would you like me to do it?
