Thank you Anne.  I will pass these on to my friend Janice whose family I was helping to research. Interesting use of 'late' in the register - perhaps she was previously married?

I think late usually refers to the mother's maiden name.

I read that 'formerly' is used for the maiden name or birth name.  I have a marriage certificate where the wife was Elizabeth late Cook, formerly Bisdee and it turned out that Bisdee was her maiden name and prior to this she had married Charles Cook.  So the plot thickens!   Lesley

One way of resolving this is to look at the other baptism entries around that time in the Yoxford PR. If all/most of the baptisms use ‘late’, it is very likely to refer to the mothers’ maiden names.
