Look at this site for the Anglican Church (Church of England) in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland - there are contact numbers and addresses including one for an archivist. I would hope that if your Rev Frederick Skinner was a minister of the church there may be records pertaining to him.

hello again

St Lukes Church in Halifax was destroyed by fire in 1905 but their records may be archived. The marriage records of your Frederic and Emma should list parents names, etc.

Here is a link to the Archives of the Anglican Church in Halifax

http://www.nspeidiocese.ca/archives/Archives.htm

Perhaps if you email the Archivist or Archive offices they would be able to assist you with finding some documentation.

Good luck

Me again

in this book

Quote
Title: Business and general directory of Newfoundland, 1877 : containing classified lists of the business men of St. John's and the leading towns and districts of the colony
Author: Rochfort, John A.
Publisher: Montreal, Quebec: Lovell Print. and Pub. Co., 1877

there are listing for Rev Frederick Skinner at LaPoile (Fortune's Bay) and a Rev HM Skinner at Salvage (Bonavista Bay)

http://www.ourroots.ca/e/viewpage.asp?ID=608350&size=3

Emily Peniston (Emma's mother) died back in Barbados in 1889. Did the Skinners return to the West Indies? Emma is listed as deceased after 1894 (not very specific).

Thelma

Ps there is no 1881 census for Newfoundland. Until the 1940's Newfoundland was not part of Canada - it was still part of the British Empire. Have you tried posting on any of the West Indies message boards or the Newfoundland or Nova Scotia boards?

Themla, You've been a great help. Thanks for all the info. I think I have Frederic covered now but I still can't find anything on Edwin Peniston Skinner, who I believe is my ggrandfather. I'm not sure where or when he was born. If you come/came across that name could you let me know...thanks a million. sara

Hi there

here is a reference to your Edwin

More About EMMA LIGHTBOURN PENISTON:
Fact 1: September 21, 1853, baptism Pembroke, Bermuda
Notes for FREDERICK SKINNER:
curate of Trinity Church, Hamilton.
More About FREDERICK SKINNER:
Fact 5: Rev, of Rosa Blanche, Newfoundland

Children of EMMA PENISTON and FREDERICK SKINNER are:

i. ELLA FRANCES PENISTON SKINNER, b. July 03, 1878, Rosa Blanche, Newfoundland, Canada; m. MURRELL HOWARD COX, June 12, 1910, St Peter's, Brooklyn, NY; b. of Barbados.

ii. SKINNER, b. June 20, 1880, Parsonage, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

iii. EDWIN PENISTON SKINNER, b. February 03, 1882, parsonage, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

iv. CLARENCE PENISTON SKINNER, b. January 30, 1884, Devonshire, Bermuda; m. MARIAN TOPPIN PARKINSON, April 16, 1909, Pembroke, Bermuda.

v. SKINNER, b. November 04, 1885, Hastings, Barbados.

Ella Cox and husband Howard show up on the 1910, 1920, 1930 census - she lists her birthplace as NewYork and she has been married twice. In 1910 she lists her age as 36 and 1930 she is 55

This couple may or may not be  related to the Skinners

Here is a coincidence - I live in Calgary and noticed this obit reference for a Robert Peniston Skinner, age 19 who died in 1992. IF you are interested in this let me know and I will see if I can find the whole obit for you.
