Florence Nina Toogood born 2 Dec 1860, Isle of Wight,
« on: Sunday 12 May 19 12:22 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a birth record for a Florence Nina Toogood.  according to a record in US find a grave site she was born 2/12/1860 Isle of Wight and died 27/11/1928 Florence Etheridge in California.

on 1861 census living in Isle of wight with grandmother Harriet Toogood and Harriet's daughter Edith Toogood.  Then in 1871 she is a border with another family.  She appears to have emigrated to the states in 1878 and married George Oglivy in 1879.  She married again to William Etheridge in 1890.

She is on the US census in 1900 and 1910 with her mother named as Charlotte Toogood born 1829/30 in England (widowed).

I cant seem to find a birth record - any ideas?

She was aged 2 in April 1861 and 12 in April 1871, so she must have been born 1858 or early 1859, not 1860.

Aged 20 on arrival in the US in December 1878, and aged 20 on marriage in January 1879, also suggesting birth in 1858.

GRO has the birth registration of Florence Alice Toogood in Isle of Wight in 1Q 1858, mother's maiden name Swatheridge. Vol 2b page 487. Slightly too early? This could be the Alice Florence Toogood born to Jeremiah and Sarah around that time.

Looks to me that she was illegitimate;

1851 Census
William Toogood. 57
Harriet Toogood, 52
CHARLOTTE Toogood, 21, Daug, Unm, born Isle of Wight, Yaverland***
Henry Toogood, 18
James Toogood, 15
Francis Toogood, 12
Edith Toogood, 7
Jane T Toogood, 7 mths

1871 Charlotte Toogood, Unm, Servant, born Yaverland, Hampshire, is in the Mainwaring household in Ryde.

1861 she is a Servant with the Ricketts Family born c 1830

She is still in England 1881-1891

So 1896 she immigrated according to Familysearch.Org and is on the 1900/1910 Census with her Daug Florence.

1900 Census has Charlotte born Feb 1830.

She was Bapt 14 March 1830 Yaverland to WILLIAM/HARRIET Toogood

All fits to me.

Trish :)

There is a submitted record for Charlottes death
21 April 1915
Dade, Missouri, United States

As the US is not my area of expertise would it name her Parents?

Hi  Thank you for your replies.  I think that trish1120 is probably right and Florence was the illigitimate daughter of Charlotte Toogood b. 1830 in Isle of Wight, to William and Harriet.

Unfortunately the death records I can find on Ancestry and Findmypast don't give the parents name.

This death record shows her Father as Henry Toogood (not William) - no husband is mentioned although it does say she is widowed (as do the US Census Records).  On one tree on Ancestry there is an elaborate story about Charlotte saying she was married to William Toogood, who died 1860,  and they owned a chemist shop in Wenenbur in Isle of Wight and lived in a 10-room house with servants just off the English Channel.  They apparently had another child Jennie who died in infancy.  I have not been able to verify any of the above information.  Is it possible that Charlotte or Florence made all this up to cover the fact Charlotte never married? Or could I have completely the wrong Charlotte?
