Hi all

I am having the same problems with Clara Agnes Budd. She was my 2x Maternal Great Grandmother. I have the marriage record showing she marries John William Godfrey in December 1877 and her age is listed as 22. However when you look at subsequent census records 1881, 1891 & 1901 it shows her born around 1858/1859 in Faringdon, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire). But when I looked on gro.gov.uk I can find no records of her, further to this I did find an 1871 Census with a Clara Budd and her father is listed as William Balhatchet Budd but his occupation is listed as priest and on the marriage record of 1877 his occupation is Carpenter and the Balhatchet middle name isn't there. All help greatly appreciated, as I would love to crack this brick wall.

What mothers maiden name is listed on their children's birth registrations?

Lots of people, ladies and gents both, didn't give their real age at marriage.

John was two years older than Clara on the marriage, but he is a year younger on a couple of the census returns.
Death
March qtr 1910 Kensington 1a 111
Godfrey, Clara Agnes
age 54

From others with the same GRO reference, death was probably in the month of March.

1871 census seems to have a Clara Budd, 23, born Cardiff, a servant in Paddington.
No idea who she might be.

Very long shot but the residence she gives at time of marriage is

16 Poplar Place

could check that in 1871 to see who was living there.

Marriage St Matthew Bayswater Westminster if that helps locate (not familiar with this area)

Think I've found William Peach - he's Bayswater born and bred and marries in the same church in 1870. Can't see any immediate connection between him or his wife and Oxfordshire, so doesn't look like a relative

Or Elizabeth Watton? :-\

Think I've found William Peach

No need to worry about him, or the other witness. They were regulars.

Can't find that Clara on earlier or later censuses or any likely birth in Cardiff area. I have found census information given about servants notoriously unreliable. I don't know if it was the servant who was untruthful about age and place of birth or the employer just guessing at age and not bothering to ask about pob at time of census - just having a vague recollection that the servant said they came from X.
