Edinburgh parish burial records - 1799.

Was there just one burial ground/graveyard in Edinburgh parish then?  ScotlandsPeople has it under Edinburgh parish.

Several parishes in Edinburgh, the High Kirk, St Giles, was sub-divided by partitions into at least four congregations. St Cuthbert's parish also worth a look!

Some of the entries on the page mention OGFK and NGFK (New and Old Greyfriars?) and one entry is for a soldier who is in the Castle Burial Ground. 

The entry I'm interested in states where it is in relation to Lord Bankton's tomb (Andrew McDouall/McDowall, died 1760).  Would you have any idea where his tomb is please?  His burial isn't jumping out at me in the burial records.

There were actually 5 burial grounds in Edinburgh at this time -

1.  Greyfriars Kirkyard
2.  Canongate Kirkyard
3.  St Cuthbert's Kirkyard
4.  Old Calton Burial Ground
5.  New Calton Burial Ground

It's not quite as simple to track down as I hoped!

I gather that Lord Bankton had a seat/pew at Tron Kirk, but it doesn't look like there was a graveyard there.

I visited Canongate graveyard last year, and I don't recall seeing any headstone or tomb for Lord Bankton.  But I could have missed it as it wasn't on my radar at the time.

You are correct that Tron Kirk does not have a graveyard.

Lord Bankton could have had a pew at any of the churches within the vicinity. One google site says he lived at James Court in Edinburgh but died at Bankton House Prestonpans and believed to have been buried at Greyfriars Kirkyard.

It is never easy with these old burial records.

James Court is now apartments and is situated at the Castle end of the Royal Mile. This would be near the Law Courts where Lord Bankton would have presided when he was a judge. The nearest church to this would be St Giles.

Perhaps there was a family plot in Greyfriars Kirkyard and that is why he was buried there.

Greyfriars Kirk possesses some historical records concerning baptisms at the Kirk (1855-present) and burials in the Kirkyard cemetery between 1658-1867.

All mentions I can find state that he was "thought to have been buried at Greyfriars". If there was a tomb still in existence surely it would have been documented?

What is your source which states the position? Are there any other details that might help identify the burial ground?
