Muttonhall and Muttonhall Colliery Houses sound a bit different from just plain “Mutton Row”. It semss like the right place though given that they are living there in 1871. Perhaps Mutton Row was a local name for the colliery houses?

I still have some work to do on this but I have come to the same conclusion as you.
I just need to confirm it.
I will be visiting Dysart in June and plan to walk the area. Perhaps from the ground things may be a little clearer.

I think that is very likely.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

If you are heading that way to look at some of these places Peter, you will find some of them no longer exist.

We are aware most of the places where the family lived no longer exist. They were probably of poor quality even then and it was a long time ago. I am travelling from North Wales and my cousin is travelling from New Zealand and it will just be satisfying to walk the streets they walked and to find our roots.

Having seen the map, and noted that there were only two cottages at Muttonhall Cottages, I take back my agreement that they are likely to have been the same as Mutton Row. I think a 'Row' would have to consist of more than just two cottages.

There's a district in the west of Edinburgh, near Cramond, called Davidson's Mains, after the individual who bought the land here in the late 18th century, but before that it was called Muttonhole. It's thought the name might be connected with sheep grazing.
