Thanks, again, ShaunJ.

Now that I am back home, with a better connection and a bigger screen, I can follow up on all those links.

Dare I ask where Alexander Young's service records might be?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

If any records of his army service exist, I would have expected to find them at the National Archives, but nothing comes up in a search of the catalogue.

See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/british-army-officers-1913/ for the possibilites. You could also try the Royal Scots museum who will conduct research for a small fee. http://www.rhf.org.uk/research/

He does seem to have remained parented to the 21st Foot. I am wondering if his posting to the Royal African Corps in half pay retirement was a matter of accounting convenience - of budgets and establishments.

Yes; hence my question.

Thank you for those leads. I will try to follow them up.

Re: Royal African Corps question - searchng for matthew Dancey/Dancy

Hi
Likewise I find the various dates for the disbanding of the Africa Corps/Royal African Corps, confusing. I'm tryng to find out more about a Matthew Dancey (or variant spellings, Dancy, mis-spellings Daney, Dency etc). So far, I've got he enlisted (? 58th Regiment?) in 1819, in Cavan, Ireland, aged 21, a labourer from Co Monaghan. He would have been a private, He is listed in the WO 25/440 series (image no 61 on the National Archives website). There is a note on that, that he served in the East or West Indies from 1820-1822.
It appears (but I can't check as I've nos subscription) that Ancestry now have these records, and that there is a following "page" ?image that gives he was transferred to the Royal African Corps 1823. If this is correct, then where would the unit have been stationed from 1823? I know there are few records of the unit. There is some reference to the African Corps receiving some replacement troops from the 60th Regiment, so I'm wondering if in fact Matthew was originally enlisted in the 60th rather than 58th. Following the African Corps disbanding, is it possible the remainder of the "ordinary" men were sent to the West Indies?
Any help much appreciated
Roz
