Hello

Sorry if this has been posted before, but has anyone got any tips on finding Irish connections? I have a match on My Heritage. She has no tree. It says she is 80 years old. She matches one of my mother's second cousins and my mother, but I don't know who she is and neither does the shared match. If it was an English match I would be able to find out who she is by searching back through records, but obviously that isn't possible with Irish records as they finish online in about 1958.

Would appreciate any guidance.

Thanks

If the test was done on MyHeritage then the match will give you an indicative relationship e.g. second cousin, first cousin once removed. Armed with that information and similar from your mother's second cousin you can tentatively try to sketch out a tree of where she might fit in.

If you want to check the relationship you can enter the number of cMs you share into the tool at

https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4

and it will give suggestions of the relationship too.

That said the best next step is to send a message to the match and hope she or whoever is managing the site responds.
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Have you tried the new(ish) cluster tool on My Heritage? It should put all your matches into neat little groups so you can see everyone else matches with her.

My first port of call though would be to contact her.  :)

Thanks for your suggestions both. I have tried contacting her, but no response. I will try auto clusters, although I think I know which line she is from, from the shared matches. I just wish Irish BMD records went a bit further towards present day and I could work it out myself, no problem!
