Jon, thank you, did not realise it was the census.  Much appreciated.  And looks like him, as still single, and a shipwright.

A possible death is now Alverstoke, Hampshire in 1904.

Hi Carol, Yes, That's the one I found.  Checked the writing, and seems the transcription is right, it says Lynton, Devon.  That is on the same coast, about 10 miles away from Northam.  Trying to see if I can find another James, that comes from Lynton, so far drawn a blanc.  So it could well be my James.  A death follows in 1904.  No monumental inscriptions available on line, but it seems a very good possible.

Had you seen this 1871 entry for Northam?  Age a few years out but look at his occupation

John Hearn 25 b Northam - ship carpenter

Susanna 3 Weeks

Think he could be the 4yr old John Heard on the 1851 census - parents William & Rebecca but can't see him on 1861

There are a lot of Hearn's from Northam.  It gets complicated.  And several ships carpenters etc.  Pretty certain my info. is right but will double check.  This John has been one of my problems.  And also Heard is a common name there.  My husbands gt. grandparents, were a Hearn to a Heard.  Luckily his father knew a lot of information before I ever started this, and even a family portrait of the Hearn to the Heard, and other knowledge from elderly aunts that have since passed, that made no sense at all, but have come to light.  Thanks for your input, its much appreciated.
