I am also not sure whether you are aware of  a person travelling with Mrs HEARN ( see above)
Relationships of one passenger to another are not described on passenger lists, but at aged 48 it is possible Mary was the mother of this girl.

SMALE, Miss B.
Address Cross Street , Northam, North Devon
Occ. Nil.
Destination Fremantle WA

If it was a child of the marriage though the surname of the girl would be Hearn wouldn't it?

Do we know the age of Miss B Smale? **

** I see it now - born 1916 which ties in with this birth

Mar 1916 Bideford 5b 702

Barbara Smale MMN Smale
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

milliepede has shown the birth registration

Mar 1916 Bideford 5b 702

Barbara Smale MMN Smale

MMN stands for Mother's Maiden Name.
Maiden is the same as nee or birth surname, so mother was born SMALE not married to a SMALE.
Therefore it seems likely Barbara was ex-nuptial.

The information regarding her father's name being William Edward SMALE could have come from anywhere including a family story that "saves face"
