John Milne & Jane Cowie
« on: Saturday 23 March 19 16:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Does anyone have this couple in their tree? Not having much luck on SP.

According to daughter Jane Milne, dies 1877 age 89 (widow of John Smith, then James Shepherd)  her parents are these two. There is a Jane Milne born 1788 Fyvie to a John Milne on SP & I think it is her as she states Fyvie as her birth place on the censuses I can find of her. There appears to be two John Milne at Fyvie during this time as I find the births of 2 boy Milnes about five months apart.
Trying to sort out who is who & get back a little further.
I'm assuming John Milne & Jane Cowie would have been married around 1788, give or take a few years & born around 1765 give or take.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Lisa

I may have just found death entries for this couple at Fyvie. Jane Cowie, or widow Milne, Horns Croft, age 84, dies 1840.
John Milne, at Banks,age 84, dies 1838.
If this is the correct people it puts their birth years to mid 1750's.

Only one entry for a marriage of a John Milne & Jean Cowie, 1775 Forfar.

Perhaps I should post in Angus/Forfarshire? or is there a way I can link this post to Angus without typing a new post?

I have had a look though the book of monumental inscriptions for Fyvie and there is nothing there to help.

Lisaw, the records are incomplete. Please do not think that because there is an entry in Forfar that it could be your couple. If you click on this link you will find out what years are covered by each parish. Remember also that this only for the established Church of Scotland. There were other denominations which are recorded elsewhere. https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//research/list-of-oprs/detailed-list-of-old-parochial-registers-of-scotland.pdf

Have you seen Jane's marriage certificate to James Shepherd? She herself will have stated who her parents were! It is available to view on scotlandspeople.

Thank you flst,

I'm only seeing the James Shepherd & Jane Milne married 1857 one, this isn't them. I've tried searching the OPR's for the marriage using both Jane's maiden surname & married surname, there doesn't seem to be a match.

I'm hoping that her son, who witnessed the death register, knew his grandparents names. This isn't always the case.

I'm also very doubtful that the marriage of John Milne & Jean Cowie in Forfar is the one I'm looking for.

Also unsure if the John Milne at Banks death is correct.

Thanks again,
Lisa

You might be on the right track with John Milne in Banks. There's a Helen Milne in Banks, Fyvie in 1841, 1851 and 1861 - unmarried with an illegitimate daughter - Janet Stables.

This Helen Milne died in 1863, aged 76, mother's maiden name Cowie.

There's also a William Milne, died 1864, Tarves, aged 82, mother's maiden name Cowie. He's at Courtstone, Tarves in 1861, born Fyvie.

Thank you Ruth!

William Milne dying in 1864 parents are John Milne & Jane Cowie, so definitely on the right path there. Son, George witnessed the death register. This William Milne married Janet (Jesse) Logan.

I'll also most definitely check out the Helen Milne you found. I only have 2 more registers I can look at before I'm out of credits. Was going to look at the 2 Milne boys that are baptized 5 months apart to try & figure out what was going on there, but I've changed my mind & will use 1 to look up Helen Milne you mentioned.

Thanks again!
Lisa

Yay Ruth!

Helen Milne dying in 1868 at Fyvie is the daughter of John Milne & Jane Cowie.

Recap: John Milne & Jane Cowie had at least 3 children. JANE MILNE who married 1st to John Smith, then James Shepherd, dies 1877 Millbrex, specifically Backhill of Gight....where most of my family came from.
WILLIAM MILNE who married Janet (Jesse) Logan, dies 1864 Tarves
HELEN MILNE unmarried, dies 1868 Fyvie
