Some years ago I found this site exceedingly helpful in tracing my London Begents.
Now I really need help as I have purchased a Rudge Motorcycle without a logbook and need to trace vehicle registration registers formerlyMiddlesex County Council for 3/10/1939 for vehicle LMC 548, but I don't know where these records are now held and how to extract a certified copy to send to the DVLA Swansea as proof that they can issue me a V5C.
Thank you
Felin

Surely the DVLA must know where they are held  :-\

Hi
You've spoken to DVLA?https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ConfirmVehicle

If you want to check the vehicle record held by DVLA...  Please contact vehicle enquiries: An advisor will be able to assist you 8.00am - 7.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.00am - 2.00pm on Saturday.

Thank you for your replies.
Unfortunately I must provide the DVLA with certified copies of the 1939 entries of the former Middlesex County council vehicle registration register.
I am uncertain where these records are archived and therefore look to your superior knowledge of the London system, as I am in the Northern part of Wales.

Hi
Surely, if the DVLA must have "certified" copies then they would know where they are being held?
Otherwise, how would they recognise the certification?

?

What did the DVLA say to you when you asked where you could get them from as Middlesex CC no longer exists and councils are no longer responsible for vehicle licensing.

Is this post any help

Middlesex CC > GLC > GLA(the Mayor) ?
Why not ask City Hall?

Records may not have survived:

https://search.lma.gov.uk/SCRIPTS/MWIMAIN.DLL/105465052/2/1/38?RECORD&UNION=Y#coll4

"Only one register of vehicle registration survives (ref MCC/LT/VE/1). This is for the period 1916-1919 and covered the areas of Edgware, Kingsbury, Little Stanmore, Great Stanmore, Finchley, Hendon, Wembley and Willesden. The format of the register is that of a register of car owners rather than of index numbers. These index numbers are highly varied and of no set pattern."

Chances are the number may have been sold many years ago and someone with the initials LMC has the reg on their car.  This used to be big business and bikes rather than cars were popular donor vehicles because they are much smaller to store - the number has to belong to a vehicle, you couldn't buy a vehicle with a reg you fancied and hang on to the log book but dispose of the vehicle.

For starters I'd suggest you get in touch with the VMCC (vintage motorcycle club) and/or the Rudge owners club if such an organisation exists.  One or other of them may have a list of numbers issued to the Rudge marque.  And they will certainly be able to advise you on how to go about reclaiming the original number or else registering the bike with a new age-related number.  I hope you're planning to ride it  :D
