Kingswood
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 08:55 GMT (UK) »
I have a Will dated 1597 stating the person was from Kingswood Wilts, despite all the family before and after being from areas around Kingswood Gloucestershire.  In an Indenture concerning his son in National Archives there is a statement "  Kingswood, Wiltshire [recte Gloucestershire],"  I think recte means rightly or correctly.
I am wondering why these people seemed to be confused over the county they were in.

I would welcome any ideas
Many thanks

From GenUKI:

Kingswood (nr. Wotton-under-Edge) Formerly a detached portion of Wiltshire; transferred to Gloucestershire, 1844.

This is a different Kingswood to the other one near Bristol & Bitton ;D
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thanks.  That clears up the Glos vs Wilts query, but I had assumed the Gloucestershire Kingswood was the same as the one near Bristol.  There were two of them then so would both have been recorded as Gloucestershire, as are Bitton and Wotton Under Edge?

Correct!
On the GenUKI list of Towns and Parishes for Gloucestershire it shows:
Kingswood (nr Bristol)     and
Kingswood (nr Wotton)

Same thing for Donnington, Eastington, Preston, Staunton and Westbury. There are 2 of each of them in Gloucestershire ;D

Hi
Re; multiple places with the same name, particularly if new to another;
Newbiggin =  Cumbria x 4, N Yorks x 3, Durham x 2 and Northumberland x 1 (and that one isn't Newbiggin by sea)
Newby = N Yorks x 4 and 1 each in Lancashire and Cumbria.
Malmesbury- Bishop.
Gloucestershire-Bishop,Hicks,Higgs,Hill,Hooper,Hopkins,Pitcher,Robertson,Stinton,Terret,Woodruff.
Worcestershire-Stinton.
Devon- Borrough or Burrow.

This doubling up of Kingswood particularly is going to need some sorting out but many thanks for clarifying that for me.
