I recall visiting the GRO in Edinburgh, and other Registration offices in the past and was able to view a single entry and take notes in return for a few pounds.

Is this still possible?

Yes, You pay £15 for a day's unrestricted access to all the records, but only in Edinburgh and in the archives (not the registration offices) at Aberdeen, Glasgow, Hawick and Inverness, and possibly one or two others. It's best to book a seat in advance - see https://bookings.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ or the individual archives' web site.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you I know that.

I am talking about viewing a single entry. I used to call in at Martha St in Glasgow pay a couple of quid and see the entry. Not sure if you can do it in the current set up.

I think you can still call in and get a single entry, but not sure if you can view it for yourself. And I have no idea what they charge for that.
