Tall Al found that birth on Free BMD. I looked it up in the online GRO index to find the mmn.

Hi,

I can't see a marriage between a "Griffin" and a "Rich" which fits the bill and whilst this is a total guess, there is a Mary Ann Rich (baptised in Liverpool in 1835) who lived in Liverpool in 1851 but by 1861 was living on the Wirral with her widowed father Joseph. She appears to have remained unmarried.

I just wondered if she possibly might have had a relationship with Thomas Griffin in 1853/54 at the tender age of 18 or so which resulted in the birth of Annie/Anna Griffin?

Both the Rich connection and the James Griffin and Rebecca connection are very interesting.

I wonder why she put Thomas on her marriage cert.  Having said that, I've come across two other ancestors who put the wrong fathers name on marriage cert.  I believe that the reason one did it was because he thought his grandfather was his father.
