I understand that a lot of records have been digitalised on the SOG website but they are officers born after 1833, any idea where I need to look for someone born before that? I'm going round in circles for my sins.

First, you need to determine whether your man was in
Customs
or
Excise
. At these early dates they were two different services.
These two research guides will show you what records are available for each service ...
