Du Manoir Loreto Thomas O.P.
« on: Wednesday 27 February 19 04:10 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information to write a short history about Rev. Loreto Thomas Du Manoir.
As a Dominican priest he served as a Chaplain during WW2 attached to the 4th SA Infantry Brigade; Number 10593V Lt. Col L Du Manoir . He was in Johannesburg in 1946.
I have no real information about him. He looks to be in his mid to late 30's at the end of the war in 1946 so I estimate he would have been born around 1910<> and perhaps, deceased by 1980-1990
Links or information about Rev. Loreto Du Manoir would much appreciated if anyone has time to help.
I'm not in South Africa and am finding that links that would usually be expected to show on google just are not there for me. Links that would be apprecciated would be to Deceased Clergy in South Africa Lists or to family genealogy that may be available.
Many thanks

Hmm ...My google must be working differently  ;D

I found the link to an interesting document and it seems that Loret(t)o might have been a fair bit older than you thought :
https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/43175606.pdf mentioned that he was born on 10-12-1883 (p479) and there was a photo of him on page 138.

And with this I found that his death was registered in Surrey South Western (England) in the last quarter of 1977

PS
There are also 2 marriages for a Loretto du Manoir that you might want to have a look at:
1953 Westminster to Margaret M Perkins/Fraser
1966 Surrey South Western to Elizabeth A Harcourt

Thank you.  I think our man is the clergyman who emigrated to Australia.
I will use your information to see what I can find.
Note: as a catholic priest he would not have married.
Thank you so much for your help.

Australian newspapers (Trove) -

The search key "du manoir" returns 89 hits - two refer to Loreto

The real questions are whether he was a fully ordained priest and/or whether he remained a priest (I suspect that he was too political for the church)?

An L du Manoir  from West Kensington  has a letter published in The Times August 9, 1954. Part of it is as follows:
“… but after 20 years of extremely varied work with White and Black and Coloured in South Africa as missionary, military chaplain and welfare worker – I am still a Governor-General’s appointee on the National Organization for ex-Service Men … “
