So he was born Portsmouth, Hampshire.

I can't guarantee that this is him in the Royal Navy, but they noticed the use of both as well!

The father, Edwin/Edward is problematic.... in 1871 he is listed as born in Portsmouth, but earlier census, it looks more like he was born in Sussex.  The Archives has this:

Although the Edwin I am following is down as born Purbroook, its looks to me that he was born Sussex.

That was the "other" Thomas Edward Fifield.  There was two of them born around the same time.  :-\   We want the one married to Eliza Jane Pepper, so Thomas' parents are Edward/Edwin Fifield and Emma Newman.
