Great Uncle`s Service record
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello People,

I have recently been given the service record of my late great-uncle. It seems that he served in Africa, Italy, France and was part of the Defense Corp.

A few things I cannot understand though.

Pic 1

Top line - reads 10/B.YY ? Apparently he was in the 10th Bn Black Watch in 1940 - would later transfer to the 1st Black Watch.
2nd line - apped ? u / paid ? - a / w / cpl ? - do not understand this
3rd line - reverts to at own requests ? does this mean the rank ?
4th line - R.N.G.Y.H ? If that is correct, I cannot find any information on this ?

Pic 2

Here - I just do not understand the numbers - to what do they mean ? I have done extensive search on the Black Watch - but the codes and numbers mean nothing to me. All I see is 10th Black Watch and at the bottom the 1st Black Watch. Any help would be appreciated.

If I understand correctly, at the bottom are all the medals Sam should have been rewarded ?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Luke

I middle column
Posted 24/6/1940 Pte (Private)
Appt'd (appointed) Unpaid  Acting Lance Corporal 26/8/1940
Posted  Acting Lance Corporal  9/11/1940
Reverts at own request Pte (private) 29/11/1940
Proceeded overseas Pte (private) 14/3/1943

Killed in Action NW Europe Pte 22/6/1944
Auth (get these translated by people on Military board?

Couple of things

Defence or  Defense

The abbreviations are standard Def Ministry ones and usually are on the website for historic records. When I got my father's and uncles' WW2 records here in NZ they came with a tip sheet showing what the abbrevs meant.

My Dad had a couple of reverts of rank so he could get closer to the action but he kept being hauled back behind our lines as he was more useful as a staff sergeant than at the frontline.

Your Gt Uncle may not have felt he was suited to L/Cpl rank or he may have wanted to get closer to the action.

The two columns on left hand side
Authority 49/40 etc and if you looked t the unit admin files there will be an order or approval with this number on it.

Unit This is the unit he was in

I am wondering if he was transferred to Royal Navy Gunnery?
