Looking for James Morison of Burntisland
« on: Sunday 14 August 05 11:25 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the family history of James Morison born November 4, 1832 in Burntisland.   James migrated to Australia and married Elizabeth Young (born September 5, 1831 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire) at the Scots Church, Melbourne, Victoria in 1857.

Any information would be much appreciated!

Burntisland is in Fife not Clackmannan

The only reference i found for him was on LDS and they were not parish extracts,so not very reliable i'm afraid.

This is what i found:

familysearch.org is available worldwide as is scotlandspeople.gov.uk (the official site for Scottish records) although pay-per-view at very reasonable cost.

Marriage Burntisland Alexander Morison and Helen Garnoch Sept 1830.

Possible birth/baptism for Helen - showing as Hellen Garnock 28/09/1798 -parents James Garnoch and Margaret Morrison.
(Siblings? Ann 1791, Betty 1794, Charlotte 1796, Janet 1788, Margaret 1792 and James -he is transcribed as Garnoch -1800).

1841 census has this

High Street Burntisland

James Garnock 80
Margaret Garnock 80
Janet Garnock 50
Eliza Garnock 30
John McBride 10
Charlotte McBride 9

(  There is a marriage of a Charlotte Garnock marriage to John McBride 7/02/1821 in Burntisland).

Baptism ? Alexander Morrison 30 / 10/1794  Burntisland parents George Morrison and Margaret Lessels.

1841 census does have a George Morison 75 and Margaret Morison 70 in Burntisland.

These are simply  some possibilities worth exploring further.

Good finds, Dod! Alexander appears to have left a will.

The will is dated 11/5/1871 with the description Supervisor of Inland Revenue at Falkirk, lately residing at High Street Burntisland.

Of all the documents available on Scotland's People, marp,  this is probably the best one to obtain as it may indicate that this is the correct family ( cost 10 credits).

William

Added: Helen died 16 Nov 1878. She died intestate - confirmation to Rev John Morison, Minister North UP Church, Auchtrmuchty.

Fife Herald 9 Feb 1871 has death notice for Alexander "on the 5th inst. "
