Hi everyone,  Yes Alexander Morison left a will which is available on Scotlands People.  Helen Garnoch returned to Burntisland after his death and resided  for some time with her son Rev John Morison  in Auchtermuchty.

However, let me go back a little and add some details of the children of Alexander Morison and Helen Garnoch to the information already posted.
1) George,  eldest son  became a pharmacist in Peebles.  He and his wife had no children.
2) james, the second son, emigrated to Melbourne Australia.  He married Elizabeth Young at the Scots Church in Melbourne in 1857.Elizsbeth Young was born in Pattertown, Kilwinning. James was a plasterer living in Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne.
3) Alexander was a draper and seemed to move around a bit in Scotland.   The will of his father is interesting in that he left Alexander very little as he had already given/lent him money.  Alexander and family emigrated to the USA shortly after his father's death.
4) Henry emigrated to New Zealand and Morison descendents there have been active in tracking their family history back to Burntisland.
5) Andrew was lost at sea following the wreck of the "General Grant" off the coast of New Zealand. The survivors of the wreck were stranded on an island and Andrew and two others set off to try to find mainland and get help.  They were never heard from again.  The romantic story of this has been passed down the Morison family for generations.  Andrew had been staying with his brother James in Melbourne before signing on for the voyage with the "General Grant". The few belongings that Andrew left behind were returned to his brother Henry in New Zealand.
6) John Morison became a Presbyterian minister at Auchtermuchty and was there for 42 years.

I do have more information on the Morison family if any of you are interested.

Hi, I thought I would add a bit more information.

I visited Burntisland a few years ago from Australia.  I  know a similar visit was made a few years later by a Morison descendant from New Zealand.  In the Burntisland churchyard is an imposing monument to George Morison (1761-1847), a ship's master, his wife Margaret Lessly (1761-1847?)and family.  We also found a modest stone which was lying on the ground for their son Alexander Morison and wife Helen Garnoch.

Further information Burntisland deeds 1731-1896:
"GARNOCK, JAMES: shipmaster in Burntisland; Disp in favour of spouse, Mgt Morison, in life-rent (also life-rent to his unmarried daughters, Janet and Betsy, while they remain unmarried), and to children: sd Janet and Betsy; Helen (w of Alexander Morison, Officer of Excise); Ann (widow of James Muirhead, residing Dunbar); Mgt (widow of Andrew Wilson); and Charlotte (w of John McBride, sailor in Burntisland); 7 March 1844 [B9/8/1 folio 142-47]"

And from the Kirkcaldy Deeds:
"MORRISON, DOUGLAS: merchant in Kirkcaldy; Trust Disp & Settlement for relations, including George Morrison, shipowner in Burntisland; Mgt Morrison, spouse of James Garnock, also shipowner there;; and Mgt Morrison, residing Burntisland, widow of John Mills, late merchant in Aberdour; 5 May 1824 [B41/8/1 fol 152-55]"

George Morison was the father of Alexander Morison of Burntisland.  George Morison was a ship's master and there is an imposing gravestone still standing in the churchyard there with all the family details.

Likewise, didn't notice the date on the original post.
Thankyou 'marp' for an update on a family we took an interest in, even though we were too late to be of any help. Enjoyed the search, especially since distant relatives of mine married into a Morris/Morrison family in the Kinghorn area, but I didn't find any connection.
               Regards,     Dod.

Marp I know this thread is quite old but I wonder if you have done much work on the garnock family.
I am trying to link the fife garnocks to my edinburgh garnocks but cant quite find the connection yet. Looking at the 1851 census your relatives Alexander Morrison and helen garnoch lived in same street as my second great grandmother Mary anne garnock who was a domestic servant to a family of teachers. I think cant just be a coincidence and maybe they got her a job as she had no parents and was a distant relative. Mary Anne's father was John garnock who's brother william buchan or beveridge garnock moved to dysart to be a grocer in 1832 and died in 1881 wth his son having the business until they died in 1920s. This is another reason I think there is a fife connection.
Any help would be welcome
Ferguson (st fillans, comrie)
Garnock (lothian, fife)
Valet (london, switzerland)
Butcher (ramsgate, glasgow)
Blackbird (durham,  newcastle)
Barr (ayrshire, ireland)
Fleming (paisley)
Crone, croney ,(dumfriesshire, ireland)

I am trying to trace the family history of James Morison born November 4, 1832 in Burntisland.   James migrated to Australia and married Elizabeth Young (born September 5, 1831 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire) at the Scots Church, Melbourne, Victoria in 1857.

Any information would be much appreciated!

It amazes me when people post skeletal info. about their ancestors, omitting wives (who could be the Fife connection)?, dates, places of BMDs & other important info. pertaining to those people.

When/where was Mary Ann born/married/died, who was her mother?

What info. do you have on father John?

Have you looked at the DC of William (brother of John)?...

GARNOCK WILLIAM 68 - SMITH (mms) - 1881 - 426/ 158 Dysart

From this we know their mother was surname Smith.

What info. have you found on census' re Mary Ann, John & wife, William et al?

When/where did John & wife die?

Please list all info. you already know to save duplication of effort for any/all willing to help in your search.

Sorry I have no more information.  I began this  thread in 2005 and many people added information as they did more research (including me).

I am not investigating this family tree any more.  However, I would like to thank all those who contributed so many years ago.
