bbart - When researching the "nli" for Dunlavin, Co. Wicklow I found that the surname Lenhan in time and at times became Lennan. Lenehan and Lenihan seem probable variants of Lenhan. I had never heard of the surname "Lenhan" until I began my research. I thought that the priests had shortened it from Lenehan.

Since Robert's son James named his son Gregory Lennon, I thought that it might have been in honour of grandmother Esther's surname Lenhan.

Too many questions and not enough answers.

I always try to compare names that are on the same page as the entry I'm researching. It is interesting to see first letter styles change from one entry to another especially when it appears that it is the same person writing the entries.

At this point, I'm just happy that I found Robert's birth information.

I found his parents' marriage information. Would their marriage certificate contain their parents' names? The witness beside Esther's name is her brother Murtagh Lenhan. I found birth information for his children. It appears that Patrick Lennan and Mary Margaret Byrne might be Esther's parents but I don't have any proof as of yet. Siblings might include "Murtagh", "Bridget", "Edward" and "John".

I cannot find a birth certificate for James Johnson (parents unknown but the names James and Robert alternate with every generation and his father could be Robert or James) and Esther Lenhan. Is there any place that I can search for free in order to be able to order a birth certificate? They would probably be born between 1800-1811 or so. Do the Irish records go that far?

Any help or push in the right direction is much appreciated.

I would like to do some searching but I don't want to pay and not be able to find any useful information.

I've encountered so many dead ends lately. Some good news would be wonderful.

It's a subscription only website; as far as I know you have to register even to search & get index entries. It is possible to take out short term subscriptions, like 24 hours or a month.

Thank you conahy calling! That is the troublesome birth entry that has been a challenge to read.

Thankfully is till exists but it would be wonderful to be able to make out all the information.

I'm a patient person and enjoy a challenge.
