George Johnston & Euphemia Taylor
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 20:38 GMT (UK) »
I’m trying to find out when & where George Johnston married Euphemia Young Taylor; she was born 14th December 1868 in Leith. Euphemia was the daughter of Thomas Taylor and Elizabeth Tosh Watson. The only thing I know is the year George & Euphemia married - 1894.

I’m also trying to find out a bit more about George & Euphemia’s children.

Thomas died and Elizabeth married again to a James Ross.

The 1901 census has James Ross and Elizabeth living at Bonnington Road, Leith with, amongst others, Euphemia and two granddaughters, Isabella Johnston, born 1894 in Leith, and Elizabeth Johnston, born May 1900. Euphemia was listed as Euphemia Taylor Ross, not Johnston. Elizabeth Johnstone was born in Kilmarnock, which seems strange as the family was based in Leith.

George is not listed as living there so where was he? The marriage seemed OK as the Johnston family emigrated to Philadelphia in 1905, minus Elizabeth – what had happened to her?

I’m a bit stuck; can’t find much on Ancestry (before they went to US – once in US there's plenty of information) or Find My Past or Scotland’s People so I was wondering if anyone can add to the above? Full dates & places would be great, pointers to certs even better!

Regards

How do you know they were married in 1894 if no marriage record is showing up?  Is this on the USA records?
Also, where did the middle name Young come from?  The Euphemia born in 1868 to Thomas and Elizabeth doesn't appear to have been registered with any middle name and she's just Euphemia Johnston on the passenger list too.
Have you found them on the US census?
By the way did you see on the passenger list that it states that Euphemia and Isabella had both been in Philadelphia before?  I think it says 1892-1899 for Euphemia and 1895-1899 for Isabella.  Not sure what the significance of that is.  ???

Hi Bev,

1) Marriage year - bit remiss here; taken an unsourced Ancestry tree as gospel. Which means I'm not sure when they were married. I couldn't find a candidate

2) Euphemia's full name is 'Euphemia Fame Young Taylor'. Again from Ancestry, so don't know where the 'Fame' bit came from. 'Young' is from her grandmother - Euphemia Young. Find a Grave (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/113935618/euphemia-young-scott) gives Young as well, although 'Young' not on headstone. Also Young used in US censuses.

3) Didn't notice the repeat trips to US. Which passenger list were you looking at? If Euphemia was in US between 1892-1899 then it means Isabella was born in US; that's a new line of research. It might explain why George wasn't in 1901 Scotland census - he was back in US? Did Euphemia come back to give birth to Elizabeth?

I wonder if I'm mixing up families  ???

Hi Chempat,

George died in September 1906 - he lost an argument with a train and got cut to pieces. Euphemia married John Scott on 21st December 1907.

Strange Isabella's father given as English as he is given as born in Edinburgh in 1905 passenger list.

Have you got the census record to attach (even as a private mail)?

Regards

The original of the 1905 passenger list can be viewed on FamilySearch.
Ir also states that their tickets were paid for by her brother Robert, whose address was their destination.

Hi [Chempat],

I've found a passenger list for Euphemia Taylor arriving in NY on 26th Nov 1982. I can't make out the age given; its '20 something'. The transcriber has used 20 and so got birth year as 1872; there is no birth year column on the actual passenger list.

You've said her birth date was 'abt 1869' [it's actually 14th Dec 1868] and 'age 23'. Where did you get this?

I'm looking at "Passenger lists 21 Nov 1892-13 Dec 1892 (NARA Series M237, Roll 600)" on FamilySearch.org.

The travelling out to her sister makes sense; Elizabeth went to Philadelphia in 1889.
