Help - a birth in Co Tyrone, parents Dubliners
« on: Sunday 14 August 05 08:46 BST (UK) »
I'm going to throw myself on the mercy of this board!  I'm an Aussie so can't ring places easily from here.

My gggrandparents, Joseph Huband Smith (a barrister) and Catherine Cecilia or Cecilia Catherine (nee Jephson) were Dubliners.  They were married in Dublin in 1835 and at least two children were christened there.  They were Church of Ireland.

However, my ggrandfather, Edmund Huband Smith (he later hyphenated it) was born in Co Tyrone in 1837, I am not sure where precisely.  I cannot discover why.  Joseph had an honorary (I think) title of seneschal of some manors in Co Antrim but I don't know if this is relevant.

I've looked at some of the links on this board but they don't seem to shed any light.

Can anyone suggest any kind of reason why Edmund was born in Co Tyrone, and how I might trace his birth/baptism?  I'd be most grateful.

Irish research is SO complex for someone on the other side of the world!

Hello Marie,
Re Edmund's birth in Tyrone - is it possible that his maternal grandparents lived there?  I note from some records I've collected that a Rev. John Jephson lived in Mullabrack, Co. Armagh in the mid 1820s. You describe him as the 'Venerable' so I presume at some later stage he was promoted to Archdeacon.  As such, he may have continued to serve 'his old boss' the Archbishop of Armagh whose diocese includes part of Tyrone.  Alternatively he may have been attached to the Diocese of Clogher,  or the Diocese of Raphoe, both of which also include large parts of Co. Tyrone.
A private subscription library in Belfast, the Linenhall Library, probably holds clergy lists and church histories.  I will do a cursory search for you and if anything interesting turns up I will let you know.

Brian,

You are a scholar and a gentleman!!!!  I see this is your first post, and what a helpful one it is!  This Aussie is delighted  ;D

I could be wrong about his promotion to Archdeacon - a family story but no proof.  But Catherine Cecilia Jephson's father certainly was the Rev. John Jephson and so your suggestion is entirely possible.

If you are able to do this cursory search, I will be eternally grateful!

Best of luck with your own researches, and I hope you enjoy Rootschat as much as I have, and do!

Going through old posts and not sure if you ever got more information on the family but found a few things about the family which may be of interest if you haven't seen them already.

Hi aghadowey,

Thank you so much for checking on this thread - I appreciate your interest and thoroughness enormously!   :D :D

Brian was an enormous help on this matter.  By pm and email, he provided me with a lot of info.  He doesn't seem to have been online for ages and I do hope that he is OK.

I also got some info from an Irish researcher, not as much as I had hoped.  The thing that is missing is that I have not been able to identify all the children of Joseph and Cecile, or what happened to them.  Maybe when the BMD indexes finally go online!  Although their births will be too early for those indexes.

Re the references you have given me - the first two are to my own webpage, and the others are things I knew about, and which have been minimally fruitful.  But thank you very much for looking anyway!   :D

Regards

Goodness, Mary!

It's quite possible!  My last direct Jephson ancestor was Cecile, who married Joseph Huband Smith in 1835.  She was a daughter of the Rev. John Jephson and Anna Maria nee Burleigh.  I haven't tried to trace the Jephson family from that point onwards - due to the difficulty of researching in Ireland from afar!  ::) ::)  But now you have me really interested!  This lad may well be a grandson of the Rev. John Jephson!

after seeing the marriage of anna jephson to roger casement, the more famous person of that name came to mind, i did a google and sir roger casement's mother was called anne jephson, from dublin!according to wikipedia her origins are obscure, whatever that means. i would say this would be definately worth looking into, without jumping to conclusions of course!

Thanks Tony!  :D

All those are entirely possible as relatives.  Alas, it is very difficult to do research in Ireland from the other side of the world!  But I will bear them all in mind and see what I can find.  Thanks very much for giving me the details!
