Robert Dawson
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 21:08 GMT (UK) »
Can members help me please. I am trying to learn about the ancestors of Robert Dawson. The info I have is as noted below but I do not know if it is correct -

Robert Dawson's brother Joseph was born in 1800 in Newcastle; Robert possibly in Hexham.  Robert married Molly/Marry/May Kay in Oldham 14 November 1831 at St Marys.

Robert's parents are  thought to be Robert Dawson and Jane Proud and his grandparents Thomas and Dinah Dawson born 1734 and 1736 resp.

I am sorry the info is so sparse but it is all I have so any help would be wecome.

You have not stated how you know Joseph to be Robert's brother, nor when Robert was born.
Where did Robert's birthplace come from?

Freereg has Josephs baptism at St Johns Newcastle, born 1800,baptised 1804, 4th son of Robert Dawson a cordwainer and Jane Proud native of Kendal Westmoreland daughter of William Proud.
Familysearch has a Jane Proud baptised at Kendal 1770 daughter of William Proud and Margaret.

The 1851 census has a Robert Dawson, shoemaker born Hexham aged 56 living with his wife Mally in Oldham and i can see on Familysearch a Robert Dawson baptised Hexham (no parish) 1794 father Robert Dawson.

As Pauline has stated, what, apart from the name Robert Dawson connects the two?

Ok, back to Familysearch which has the marriage of Robert Dawson and Jane Proud 29th February 1792 (leap year? less anniversaries to remember ;D)Kendal so it looks as though your people are Westmoreland natives working their way eastwards.

Pauline - thanks for your note. The info was on a piece of scrap paper in what looks like my handwriting. Where any details came from I have no idea.  I have paid the price of my folly by writing on scraps of paper when I have been given it. I hang my head in shame,  Recorder

Hello again,

Thanks to everyone for their help. Unfortunately I fear that age makes me forgetful and a bit slow on the uptake so here is some background. Firstly, thanks for introducing me to freereg; useful as we have to go to the library to access Ancestry.

I have acquired a copy of the will of Joseph Dawson who died in Kendal in 1858. It says 'the children of my late brother Robert Dawson.....' and later  'shall be forwarded to May??? Dawson of Jackson????Street Manchester St Oldham the widow of my late brother'. So Robert junior must be another son of Robert senior and Jane Proud. At the moment I cannot access the censuses to check the facts.

Good progress but can we find the father and mother of the Robert who married Jane. Again my grateful thanks to one and all.

PS Can we find out if the lady in Oldham was May Mary Molly or Mally?
