Kirkintilloch censuses

Hello all,

I have a number of ancestors (and connected families) that were weavers in the early part of the 1800s.  They lived in Kirkintilloch and I can find a number of them in the 1841 census.  I'm a little confused about something.  Some are listed as living in Gallowhill, others in Townhead and various other places.  Are Gallowhill and Townhead streets or districts?

Also, is there a good ordance survey map of Scotland (and more specifically of Kirkintilloch) online somewhere?  I found one, but it doesn't appear to have the actual streets.

Thanks.  I was able to find Gallowhill, still having some difficulty with Townhead.  I can find a street named Townhead but I'm uncertain if that's the correct place.

Since there was a number of weavers in the family, I assume this was an industrial area.

It is a street. Kirkintilloch is basically one street with lesser streets off. The Townhead (Toonheid) is the area at one end.  Hand-loom weaving was a home industry & this was industrialised in the case of Kirkintilloch by Slimon's mill which also employed women. Kirky not only had weaving but iron-foundries, boatbuilders on the canal etc,'  town motto, "Ca Canny but Ca Awa!"

It was completely dry when I was young, no pubs!    They've made up for it though!
Gallowhill was where the local Fleming baron's hung criminals.
