Well done Justjimmy, I was right with the Whitegates but on the wrong side of the road and about 100 yards further up. Not bad for a street as long as Glasgow Road.

The attached photo shows the wee cottage just behind the bushes “the gatekeeper for Whitegates lived there” the next building is the Orange Hall where 499 would have stood and the tenements next are the odd numbers 501 to 527 Glasgow road. I don’t know the wee dogs name in front of the bushes. Lol

Excellent picture, it's easy to forget how the street looked back then.

Hi

New to this site but hoping anyone could help

My great grandmother was born at 32 Sunnyside, Glasgow Road, Wishaw.

Was sunnyside the name of a block of flats?  Or a street name?  How did it work?

Thanks.

Hello shield_d welcome to RootsChat and Happy New Year.

32 Sunnyside would have been a tenement building, probably situated on Glasgow Road near the foot of Bridge Street, not sure which side of Glasgow Road but it would have been close to what is now King George V public park and the new hospital on one side of the street, on the other side is a petrol station (Sunnyside cottage is, I think, still there) and just a few yards from the Heathery roundabout.

In 1925 the families listed as living at No.32 were - Benson, Parker, Nichol, Brown, Hamilton, McLaughlan, Templeton, Boyd, Mauchlane, Kirk, Jeffrey, Hawthorn, O'Dyer and Reid.

Does that help in any way? If you posted some family names it may help to narrow things down.

Thank you. That’s helpful and makes a lot of sense

The family I’m looking into is Richards, my great grandmother was born there in 1909 but by 1911 the family had moved to 405 Clyde Terrace on the same road.
