Is this cap badge American, Canadian or British?

Hi Everyone

I am hoping that someone can tell me how I can find out if this cap badge is American, Canadian or British? The man in the photograph was born in Scotland in 1904 and emigrated to Canada in 1923. He served in the Merchant Navy in World War II.

It appears to have the American Eagle.

The badge is bugging me!  It certainly is American and he is wearing US badges of rank on his collar  (2 bars  =  Lt in the Navy).  However there should be a centrepiece, a shield with stars and stripes, to his cap badge.  Google any image of a USN offer for comparison, even back in the day.  Can't find one exactly like it though so unless someone can find the exact same one I shall put it way in the today's minor mystery tray.

I agree with MaxD : the rank badges are US military or Navy but the cap-badge is not regular Navy or Coastguard.
I wonder if if it is one of the predecessors to the US Military Sea Transportation Service ? Something like the RN's Royal Fleet Auxiliary they were the vessels that carried supplies and personnel but were not considered fighting ships as such.  Were their officers civilians or were they commissioned, perhaps with their own cap badge to distinguish them from "combat" officers ?

I am asking for a friend. I am told that he was in the Merchant navy. Strange seeing as he is Scottish/Canadian.

I had noticed what you had been told about the Merchant Navy.  Whatever the facts about his badge (the shield may have dropped off!) it isn't a pic of a British or American or Canadian Merchant Navy man so I'd wonder whether the phot has been mistaken for someone else?

Do you have his name?  Some records of Merchant seamen are searchable at the National Archives.
