Solomon Hulbert
« on: Wednesday 09 January 19 10:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I recently discovered that my ancestor was a convict who was sent to Australia in 1822, his name was Solomon Hulbert and he was christened in Melksham, Wiltshire, England 1804 (apparently along with his 2 sisters Susannah & Mary). His occupantion was a shoemaker
I don't have a lot more to go on and would really like to find out as much as I can, particularly about his parents, on the information that I have, is there likely to be a way I would be able to look up his details further and perhaps even find his parents details?

Any guidance is really appreciated

Regards
Matt

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

FindMyPast has a transcription of a baptism that might be him:

20th May 1804, parents John and Sarah, at St Michael, Melksham.

A Solomon Hulbert appears on a few of their Wiltshire Quarter Sessions records.

He also appears in the Australian records on FindMyPast; including a marriage in 1832.

Thanks very much, I do have a lot of his records once he hit Australia, including his children, wife and further run ins with the authorities.
I am particularly interested in how i can find out any details of both his parents, such as his mother's maiden name and possibly even their marriage date or birth date.

Sorry I know my way around the Australian sites, but struggle with knowing where to begin with the UK side

Again, thank you so much for the prompt and very useful information that has been provided so far

Hi Rosie

That is certainly the one, he was sentenced to death for the first one you listed there, but (thankfully for me  ;D ) that was commuted to life as a convict

It looks as though the first article I posted was an earlier theft of a watch and cash.  Ignore that I am confusing my dates

Hampshire Chronicle 18 March 1822 has him as stealing a watch & ch. (chain) - sentenced to death Wiltshire Assizes

You asked earlier about researching Melksham, Ancestry have images of the parish registers FindMyPast have transcripts.

Have you located a burial for his parents or either of them on census
