The couple who took him in were Albert Hick and Ellen née Smith (marr Mar qtr 1888 Leeds). They only had one child of their own, so may have informally adopted Harry Spoors and another boy, John Aldred Bywater, from the workhouse or by other means. Although the boys are described as “adopted” in the 1901 census, formal statutory adoption (as we know it) was not introduced until 1927.
1901: RG13/4242/82/4.
(A free index search suggests both Harry & John were still with the Hicks 10 yrs later).
