John the Daughter?
« on: Friday 21 December 18 15:42 GMT (UK) »
I'm currently trawling through online Bishop's transcripts for Norfolk and found an entry for a John registered as a daughter. Now would I be correct in assuming her name was actually Joan rather than John? No connection to my family BTW, just saw the dried ink and curiosity has kicked in.

Here's the link to the parish record. Second entry down...... https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939X-DTVT-4?i=7&wc=M625-YW1%3A160239801%2C160561901%2C160243102%2C160239804&cc=1824688

As it is in the BTs - which would be all written down in a big chunk rather than one at a time - it might just be a mistake made after just having written 'daughter' in the previous entry, which went unnoticed because someone was tired/in a hurry/thinking about something else.  If the original register entry survives it would be interesting to see what that says.

I recently got a birth certificate of a distant relative of mine who I knew was always known as Nancy Ruth Kirby Selby on every document with her DOB as 1 June 1883 and was most definitely female. An old family tale is that her mum registered her while very drunk and she was down as Nanclock

Her birth certificate has her as Lancelot Kirby, a boy and a DOB as 31 May.

Maybe it happened pretty often.
