The RE didn't pull guns they acted in the roles given above. It was the Royal Artillery that did everything gun related. They also had their own horses & the man in charge would have been an NCO not a Driver.
Horses were still the main source of transport up to 1914 so there were literally 1000's of men who had experience with them.
Ahh OK, thank you. It seems that there is some conflicting views in my family which don't quite stack up.
The information you have passed on is very clear and makes more sense. Thank you.
I am basing the fact that he was in the RE on the medal card for the only William Thomas I could find and from what his grandson told me. It is hard to discern anything from his hat badge as it is over exposed. Maybe he was in the artillery instead as they were quite specific about their story relating to him pulling guns around or maybe he helped out the Royal artillery if they were short (excuse my ignorance here if that kind of thing never happened!) ?
I can't find any other records for a William Thomas Cosby.
I am a bit lost if I am honest with you!
Thank you very much for all of your help.
Best wishes Emma
