New Year Greetings.

While a "FARMERS' CLUB" search will not find this clipping, it was very easy re-found to bring it to PP attention.


A change from GLUE to CLUB [by PP staff] will bring it up in future FARMERS' CLUB searches.


Found by accident while researching a similar subject, and had omitted to select EXACT before actioning the search. Doubt that I would have thought to have used GLUE, as an alternative spelling, to locate a missing club report.

We don't have an easy way to make spot corrections like these at this point, in the interim I'd suggest the best strategy would be to make judicious use of fuzzy search when you come across scenarios like this.

Some letters are readily mistaken by the OCR process due to factors like varying image quality, or different fonts (serif vs sans for example, or i/l/j, f/t, C/G, etc), and it can be well worthwhile adding ~1 or ~2 to words that have characters or obvious variants. This will search for every one or two-character variant of that word.

Having transcribed thousands of words from PapersPast search finds, I'm well aware of the recognition problems, but was unaware you did not have a ready fix, for altering the interpretation in future search requests of your retrieval system.

Over time you develop a number of techniques to locate missing copy, within a single issue, or a series, over a time period, by one masthead. Or go looking for re-prints of material of interest you have located from the old Library index cards, as having been published in the AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS or the Christchurch THE WEEKLY PRESS. [Publications yet to be digitized]

Without your continued efforts, these heritage items would only be available to those who have access to the original print. Great work - keep it up please.
