Budd family in Kent and Hampshire
« on: Friday 12 August 05 11:39 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help trace Budd family.  My grandfather from Ryarsh worked for Mid Kent Water as a labourer.  My great grandfather also from that area worked as a labourer.  I am trying to find my great great great grandfather who a second cousin thinks came from Hampshire (Havant).  No parish records available for Havant ???
Budd - Hampshire - Havant?
Budd - Ryarsh - Kent

Hi Stellak,

Welcome to rootschat  :D

In order to try and help you, we would need as much information as you have -  names, birthdates, birthplaces.
Would you mind posting everything you know?

The Havant parish registers survive from 1653 (deposited Portsmouth Record Office - though Hampshire Record Office in Winchester may hold microfilm copies).
The IGI has coverage of Havant up to 1876 in some form or other - it may only be marriages or it may be both marriages and baptisms but not necessarily for the whole time span.
Hampshire Family History Society has a county wide index up to 1837 for both marriages and burials. They haven't yet got a full baptismal index. Their burial index is on CDROM. It shows 15 Budd burials between 1762-1833.
On the 1861 census there are 8 Budds in Ryarsh. The oldest was Edward born circa 1805 who gives his place of birth as Hampton Hampshire. On the 1871 census he was still alive and gave Havant as his birthplace.

Hello Tanja

The information I have been given so far is that my gg grandfather Edward Budd was born in 1804 in Hampshire (either Hampton or Havant).  He married Martha Knight, born November 1812 in Ryarsh, Kent,  daughter of Henry Knight and Mary.  Edward and Martha went on to have 5 children all born between 1835 and 1849 in Ryarsh.  I have no information about Edwards parents or how he came to Kent.  Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

1861 census RG9 484 folio 187
Ryarsh  Kent
Edward Budd 56 Hampton, Hampshire (Havant in 1871), Married General labourer
Martha Budd 52  Tronly, Kent (Trottiscliffe in 1871), Wife Married
Thomas Budd 13 Ryarsh, Kent, Son
William Budd 8 Ryarsh, Kent,  Son
John Budd 12 Ryarsh, Kent, Son

These were probably their youngest children those still at home, or still living.  Edward on the 1871 census is recorded as Edward Budd senior, denoting there was an Edward Budd junior.

In Ryarsh on the 1861 census.
Folio 186
Edward Budd 27  Ryarsh, Kent, Head  Married Labourer
Louisa Budd 19  Malling, Kent, Wife  Married
Henry Budd 3 mths  Ryarsh, Kent, Son

There is a marriage for an Edward Budd and a Martha on the IGI

EDWARD BUDD
Spouse:  MARTHA KNIGHT
Marriage:  17 OCT 1833   East Malling, Kent, England

The IGI lists the children's baptisms

EdwardBudd
Christening: 14 SEP 1834 West Malling, Kent

Henry Budd
Christening: 04 SEP 1836 West Malling, Kent

MARY BUDD
Christening: 27 MAR 1842 Ryarsh, Kent

JANE ELIZABETH BUDD
Christening: 25 NOV 1839 Ryarsh, Kent

THOMAS BUDD
Christening: 30 AUG 1846 Ryarsh, Kent

WILLIAM BUDD
Christening: 10 JUN 1849 Ryarsh, Kent

JOHN BUDD
Christening: 03 APR 1853 Ryarsh, Kent

There is no Hampton in Hampshire It could be short for Southampton, but then Havant is a parish close to Portsmouth, not Southampton. I believe Portsmouth record office has indexed, certainly births from the parish records for Portsmouth and surrounding parishes so its is worth checking with them whether they have an Edward Budd baptism in Havant at about the right time. Budd is a not uncommon surname in Hampshire so there will be plenty around.

On the 1881 census Martha is a widow living with her two unmarried sons Henry aged 44 and William aged 33. She gives her birthplace as Trosley. She is still alive in Ryarsh in 1891 and still with her unmarried sons Henry aged 53 born Malling and William aged 42. She gives her birthplace as Trotterscliffe. Martha never gives her birthplace as Ryarsh. Trotterscliffe is a parish adjacent to Ryarsh (and from the internet not local knowledge I believe is pronounced Trosley?)

From the IGI

MARTHA KNIGHT
Christening:  02 NOV 1812   Trottiscliffe, Kent, England
Father:  HENRY KNIGHT
Mother:  MARY
