Seeking information about the BEALE family of Cloghran, Dublin, Ireland
« on: Sunday 25 November 18 05:33 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody please help me with information about John BEALE, born about 1820 in Cloghran, County Dublin, Ireland? I know about his descendants, but his ancestors are a bit of a mystery. I think his father was Benjamin BEALE and his mother Sarah SLATER, but that's from a tenuous source. I know John migrated to Australia between 1845 and 1848 and after that his details are much clearer but any earlier information would be muchly appreciated.

Can you give the information you know about him.

When and where did he die?

When and where did he marry?  Can you give details about his children?

John BEALE was born about 1820 in Cloghran, Dublin, Ireland. He married Mary McDONALD (year unknown) and in Dublin in 1844 he married Margaret KERR, who had previously been married to James George ROGERS. On 10 November 1845 he had a son John BEALE in Cloghran, Dublin, and on 1 July 1848 he had a daughter Sarah BEALE, also in Cloghran (there is a suggestion that he had two more daughters, Rebecca and Rachael BEALE, both born in 1850 and died in 1859, but that's doubtful). In 1849 he migrated to Australia on the ship Stag and by 1878 he was living in a house called 'Shelton' in Keilor, Victoria, Australia (which may or may not be the one in which his son subsequently lived and in which he died). There is a poorly-evidenced suggestion that John's father was Benjamin BEALE of Cloghran and his mother Sarah SLATER. By the way, the name 'Shelton' was used as a property name by other family members, suggesting some tie to that region of Dublin.

Hi

What leads you to believe John was actually born in Cloghran?

In the online Parish Registers, there is mention of the birth of his two children, John baptised 1845 and Sarah baptised 1848, but while the Register dates back to the 1700s, there is no mention of a John Beale being baptised there and no mention of Benjamin Beale.   Link to Register:-

I think I can now say that the information about Benjamin BEALE and Sarah SLATER is wrong. It was early in my search and it came from one of the data bases - I think it might have been 'My Heritage' - but I can't find it again. I've also searched through every online Irish resource I can think of and nothing prior to to the birth of John BEALE's children has emerged. So John's birth and parentage details now have to be my next focus. I guess the obvious place to start is Northern Ireland in case he migrated from there.

Thank you for your interest

Hi

Again in the online Parish Registers for St Mary's Church, Newtownbarry (Bunclody), Wexford, there is mention of the baptish of Elizabeth Beale in March 1810.  Her parents are listed as Benjamin and Temple Beale.  See link:-

https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/NTBFerns/NTB_complete_to_1903.pdf

Wouldn't this be around the time your John was born to Benjamin Beale and his wife?

There seem to be various spellings for the name Beale.

Kind regards

Where is Shelton, Dublin?
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Thank you for the link to the parish records - it's always useful to have that sort of document on hand. I've now had to suspend my belief in Benjamin and Sarah being John's parents. I think I was misled there.

Re the question about Shelton: I think 'Shelton' might have been an area or perhaps an estate or farm (most likely the latter). Its only remains are three streets in Perrystown, South Dublin: Shelton Grove, Shelton Gardens and Shelton Drive. I did a 1941-3 map overlay on the area but although it looked open enough to be farmland I couldn't find the name 'Shelton' at all.

He was there from at least 1866.

On the night of the 18th inst, the dwelling house of Mr. John Beale, of Shelton, near Keilor.....

The immigration record says he is native to the city of Cork, but then so is the rest of the family.
