GURR of RYE in 16th century

I understand a GURR family arrived in RYE from Dieppe in 16th centuary as refugees. I would like to trace my GURR family back from residence in MARESFIELD in 18 th century to see if they are the directly related to the  GURR'S landing Rye

I think you need to give us some info on what you know about your Gurr family in Maresfield then in order that we might be able to help.

Who is living in Maresfield, what dates and where did you source this info would be a start please.

Thank you so much for responding to my post.
The earliest record which I believe is accurate is the marriage of Philadelphia Falconer and Henry Gurr on 25 December 1808 in Fletching. Both PF &HG were born in Fletching, the former christened on 15 June 1776 and the latter about 1760. All this data was derived from parish records held at Sussex County Records office. They had eight children one of whom was my ancestor William Gurr ch. 30 March 1788 in Fletching. He married Francis Ann Bennett in Maresfield on 8 April 1809. They resided in Maresfield where their nine children were born. (SCRO records)
It is the parents of HG that I have little firm data. There is a John Gurr ch. 20 February 1723 in Fletching who may be related but may not as the name John is not a name used in my family. Beyond John Gurr it becomes a mystery although I found a Thomas Gurr married to Elizabeth Sheppard in Lewis bet. 1675 – 1725. All of this early data is rather suspect.

Hi, sorry forgot to say welcome to Rootschat.

Have had a very quick look at baptisms in Fletching and there doesn't appear to be one for a Henry Gurr around 1760.  There is though a burial in Fletching on 2 July 1833 for an 88 year old Henry Gurr which would give a birthdate of around 1745.

Soundex is giving Carr as a variant of Gurr so that might be worth investigating.

Sorry have to go out now and away for weekend so can't look any further but hopefully another Rootschatter will see this and take up the quest.

Thank you for your post concerning Thomas Gurr. I did have some fragmented data on Thomas, mostly relating to his death in 1794. I had nothing of his wife and where the marriage occurred.
Many thanks so now I will see if I can trace his children and where they were christened.

These seem a bit too far away from the original parish, Keymer but are getting nearer to Rye..
