Russia to England
« on: Friday 09 November 18 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
Can anyone help me find the emigration records of Hyman Boodson and his brother Nathan Boodman, who were born in the 1860s in Russia and we're living in Nottingham by the time of the 1891 census?
I have no idea if this sort of information is available as have never dealt wi Russia before in my research... Any help appreciated  :)

I am not aware that such records exist, but others may know.

Is there anything specific you are hoping the record may tell you, apart from giving you an exact date?

Surely their UK marriages would give some assistance?

Yes, marriages (if they married in England), naturalisation records, other censuses.

Were they Jewish? https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/UK/

Is the 1891 the first record you have of them? Have you looked for them in 1871 too, or do you know they were not in England at that stage?

There may be information about them in Trade Directories if they were in business. They may have had obituaries.

Nathan Boodson married 1884 Prestwich, died Manchester 1929 aged 66 (b. abt. 1863)
Hyman  Boodson married 1890 Prestwich, died Wandsworth 1937 aged 71 (b. abt 1866)

According to http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk , both these marriages took place at Manchester, Great Synagogue. There are some experts in Jewish records around on this site who might be able to help you with what records in the UK could give you more information about their origins.

I do not see naturalisation records for them, but many immigrants in the 1800s did not bother with naturalisation. They were almost certainly emigrants from the Pale of Settlement - if you aren't aware of the background behind Jewish emigration from Russia at this time, it will make for sobering reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_of_Settlement

Just letting my imagination go haywire.

It is more than likley that they anglicized their surnames after arriving in Britain and looking for Boodson in Russia will lead to nothing

Possible surnames could have been:

Bodzon, Bodzyn, Bodzen or Budzon, Budzyn, Budzen

If you search in Ancestry and Family Search for Bodzon/Budzin you get results that lead to places like:

Braslaw, Poland
Aleksandrow, Poland
Lodz, Poland
Tuchel (Tuchola), Poland

Suwalken, Poland/Russia
Zygmuntowo, Poland/Russia

A lot of jewish familys came from Suwlaken, Polish - Russian border area

https://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Suwalki/suwe009.html

I didnīt find any hits that fit your query, this is all very speculative and it could be a load of nonsense, but i think it could be worth given a thought.

I have recently come across this topic and although it is not a current one, thought I would reply.
I'm actually a descendant of Hyman Boodson and have information of which I am happy to share.
