Richard Lawrence veterinary surgeon Birmingham
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 16:19 GMT (UK) »
Richard Lawrence, veterinary surgeon of Birmingham, published from there in 1801 and 1809, but was probably practising there from as early as 1790. By 1816 he had probably moved to London.
Although an important figure, nothing seems to be known of his dates or life, except that he was a "mature student" at the London Vet College from 1791 till maybe 1795.

Any help gratefully received.
Andrew.

What is your connection to him?

Although he was in practice in Birmingham - was he actually born there?  When and where did he die and how old was he when he died?

Google suggests he wasn’t just a vet

There is an article in the Leamington Spa Courier 13 September 1828 referring to the Edgedean Fair, Sussex (cattle show) where the appointed judge was Richard Lawrence, late Veterinary Surgeon to the Staff Corps Cavalry.

A number of newspaper articles make reference to Richard Lawrence.

Thanks both. As I said, nothing seems to be known about his dates or place of birth. I am researching him in connection with the books he published and his life as a vet. He was also a very accomplished artist.
I'll follow through on the newspaper angle and see where it gets me.

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

Have a look at this link -

https://www.britishartstudies.ac.uk/media/_file/articles/facsimile-transcription-2.pdf

Scroll down to Mr Lawrence, 4 Marlborough Street.
Richard Lawrence (1764–active 1840?), sculptor, painter, and veterinarian.
There are references to his life married to Francis Smith in 1804.
Perhaps this is your man?

Excellent JJen, many thanks. And the newspaper tip was very helpful, got a lot from spending an hour on the BNA.
