3. I walked Waverley cemetery for ages trying to find a headstone for George Francis that corresponded to the plot number given by the cemetery and I couldn't find it. I would be really keen to see the headstone you found.

Apologies if this has already been posted, but there is a photograph of the headstone here:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/190888903

It does say that the older headstone (George's) is too weathered to read.

No wonder folk have trouble sorting their trees.  ::)

I have found and visited the graves of almost everyone of my direct ancestors except for George and Elizabeth Barnes  and William Partridge (maybe died 1843)and Margaret Stafford (died about 1840) all of whose death certificates I can't find so I don't even know yet where to look.

Inquest for William, last column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12414271

This is the only Margaret STAFFORD I see between 1830 and 1860

You may like to start new threads on the Barnes' and your Margaret, with as much detail as possible.

Right, the Geo SMITH I found at Waterloo is not related to Mary Ann HAM, but my rellie has a number of files for George SMITH in NSW in 1870s and is getting them out to go through ... yes, with SMITH in NSW you do collect a number of wallpaper bdms ...   :D

Hi all,
A thousand apologies for saying I hadn't found George Francis Smith's grave. All I can say is that it was late at night!!!! I am the person who posted on Find A Grave. Many thanks to those who have posted, especially Jamjar.

I have spent the time since I last posted doing more research and as all his children had triple middle names I think he was born George Richard Francis Smith and after he married he dropped the Richard so I researched George Francis and George Richard.

On the other hand reading the suggestion that he jumped ship or was previously married and not divorced or widowed maybe he was born George Francis or George Francis Richard and used the Richard to disguise himself for the marriage and then reverted to George Francis. If he was trying to disguise himself he may not have been a mariner?

Florence Glencora Rose’s birth certificate says he was 52 years old on 25 March 1895, was a labourer and was born in London. So that places his birth after 25 March and before 31 July 1843.

His death certificate says he was born in London, was aged 58 years and had been in the colony for 27 years and was 31 years old when he married in July 1873 and died on 11 January 1901. So he was probably born between 11 January and 31 July 1843.

Am still putting together what I have found.

There are a couple of possibles, each registered as George Richard SMITH (no Francis)and both registered 1842, born in London.  However it seems a bit of a long shot to me.

George Richard SMITH,
Registration Quarter:   Jul-Aug-Sep, 1842
Registration district:   Lambeth

(I think my maths is right  - maybe not!)  This man would have turned 52 in Jul/Aug/Sep of 1894 so would still have been 52 possibly until June 1895, (Florence's birth)
turned 31 in Jul/Aug/Sep of 1873 so still may still be 31 in July 1873 (marriage)
turned 58 in Jul/Aug/Sep of 1900 so still be 58 in January 1901 (death)

George Richard SMITH, 1842, Oct-Nov-Dec qr
Registration district:   Islington
(Similar ages to above)

Sorry if you already have a marriage cert but if not perhaps it would be worth getting the certificate for the marriage mentioned by Jamjar in Reply #4

767/1873 SMITH George Richard to HANE Mary Ann SYDNEY

Edit to add: see next post; sorry couldn't remember that Debra had found it.  Thanks, JM
