thanks for all of this great information. I think I will look further into the military information you have provided. As far as the change in religion noted in the census data, I think that the notation of Presbyterian on the 1911 census is just whatever the person giving the information provided, not necessarily an answer that Mary would have given. Having said that there is an indication that the family attended the Church of Ireland by the time of my grandmother, at least for baptism and marriage, so another avenue to explore.
