1851 Census - Chorlton upon Medlock
« on: Sunday 01 August 04 16:47 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there with a copy of the 1851 Census who would be willing to do a lookup for the ALTY family living at either No. 1 or No. 9 Hill Street, Chorlton upon Medlock.

Hi,

In 1841, Hill Street, C-o-M there was a Robert Alley, 25, a Carter by occupation. With him are his wife, Anne or Annie, also 25 and William aged 2. I know it isn't Alty but spelling was pretty erratic then. Let me know if they look likely.

There isn't a house number unfortunately, just "Hill St." at the top of three pages and "Do" under all other entries on the pages.

I looked on the 1841 because I have it spread out in front of me when I saw your request. I will now dig out the 1851 for you. Will post a message when I have taken a peek.
Bye for now, Doreen

Hi,

I searched the 1851 and I can't locate a Hill St. Many of the streets I am searching for are missing too. Sorry about that.

Hill Street is shown in the unfilmed part of Chorlton upon Medlock, the CD of which is obtainable from Manchester & Lancs FHS.

Hi Freestone, The streets I am looking for are Welbeck Street and Jenkinson Street, I believe Welbeck is well and truly lost but what about Jenkinson, is that lost too, do you know?

I have just been through 1851 Chorlton on Medlock and unfortunately it has all but disintigrated.  There are only very small fragments at the beginning of each page with the odd couple of names visible.
Very sorry, it is impossible to read below first two or three half-lines as it is completely blacked out.
Very sorry to disappoint you.

Doreen

:( Sorry to tell you but both Welbeck Street and Jenkinson Street are among the missing streets in the 1851 unfilmed census of Chorlton upon Medlock.

The lost streets are in the area bounded on the N by the SE side of Rosamond Street; on the W by the E side of Boundary Lane and Embden Street; and on the S by the Township boundary with Withington and Rusholme; and on the E by the W side of Oxford Street/Road and Chorlton Road.

This area contains the returns of 10,021 persons which are lost forever  :( :( :(

HTH!
