If the man with the criminal history in NZ is always just James McLAREN, no second given name, why does anyone think he is your James McKay McLAREN?
There is a lot of uncertainty and discrepancy in the story you are using. The history, 1980s, written by an earlier researcher, would be useful to you but I think you need to do your own research.
