Yes, hallmark, but where was this alleged "large ironworks"? I've looked for it on old maps and in various books. Quentin was a millwright, no family money so far as I can see, and I suspect the description of him having been the proprietor was probably a bit of an exaggeration.
His son, after he became wealthy, had a family tree drawn up which contains some real blarney - that ancestors fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie - very unlikely given their background in Ayrshire, and I could find no trace of any such thing among the family's records in the Scottish Record Office. So maybe the "large ironworks" story came from the same source - perhaps someone telling James Edward McConnell what he wanted to hear.
